The Different Types of 4WD Tyres

ALL TERRAIN TYRES (AT)

As the name implies, all terrain tyres are a great all rounder that provides a good balance of on and offroad capabilities. They keep things reasonably comfortable on sealed roads while giving you great durability and traction to handle the Australian outback.

Tyres suited towards off-road driving feature a deeper tread depth, wider channels throughout the tread and an overall thicker construction. This helps them deal with the numerous hazards you can encounter off road, including mud, stones, rocks, sand, abrasion, cuts and impacts. Keep in mind a thicker construction does reduce some on road handling and wet on road capabilities. The thicker construction could also contribute to road noise and fuel consumption. This is why if you rarely go off road and if so, just do light off roading (country roads / rural properties), then highway terrain (HT) tyres may be more suited for your needs. Many drivers do report though that AT tyres provide a reasonably comfortable ride, good handling and less noise than MT tyres.

If you spend more than half your time driving on roads with significant time off road as well, AT tyres could be perfect for your four wheel drive. Whether you’re after the BFGoodrich AT KO2 or Hankook Dynapro AT2 to name just a few, our tyre experts can help you quickly find what you need at a great
price.

MUD TERRAIN TYRES (MT)

Often referred to as muddies, MT tyres excel when dealing with mud and wet off road conditions. You can spot mud tyres easily by their huge open tread. Their open tread can pass through mud and dirt far more easier than other forms of tyres. The large open tread and blocks provide a great grip too, enabling you to tackle serious off road terrain.

Mud terrain tyres could be considered the most heavy duty of all 4×4 tyres. Their clever design, large tread blocks and thick sidewalls help protect them from punctures, cuts and impacts that could be
encountered when off roading.

MT tyres can cause noise on the road and potentially increase fuel consumption. If the budget permits, some drivers keep a set of mud terrain tyres in their garage for the weekend bush bash, with AT or HT tyres used at other times on the road. If you’re serious about tackling mud and slippery conditions off road, then mud terrain tyres could be perfect for your four wheel drive. The team at Ron Finemore Tyres can help you find the exact muddies to suit your vehicle, at a fantastic price.

HIGHWAY TERRAIN TYRES (HT)

Highway terrain tyres are suited to 4bys that spend most of their time on sealed roads with the occasional adventure off road. Where they excel compared to all terrain and mud terrain tires is their
on-road handling, low noise generation, ride comfort and highway speed durability.

Some drivers choose to use HT tyres throughout the week and their time on sealed roads, then keep a set of MT tyres for when they want to go off road. Keep in mind that while highway terrain tyres can
handle some light off road work, if you’re into hardcore off roading, then you will most likely want to look at all terrain and mud terrain tyres for extra traction and durability.

If your 4×4 lives mainly on the road, consider HT tyres for comfort and great handling.
